Journeys

Welcome to my travel blog. Every year my family and I set off on an adventure seeking to explore the world in which we live. We try to experience the culture of each new place we visit. These trips are referred to as the "Sita Family Cultural Road Trip!" I treasure this time with my kids. We spend about 20 days locked up in a car, traveling over 3000 miles, and staying in Econolodges the whole way. We travel on a very tight budget but lack seeing nothing. I hope to share some of our money saving tips with you as well as recieve a few. The places we see, the things we do together, the laughter and tears we share, have created priceless memories that will last a lifetime. This year I was able to experience my childrens social study books coming to life, as they studied many of the places we have been so blessed to experience. Our trips have become a talking point among our friends. It was suggested that I begin a travel blog to share some of our experiences along the way. It is my hope you will enjoy our journey and that it may inspire you to venture off on your own family adventure!

Day 10: Vicksburg to Natchez, to Layfette, LA

The best way to describe today is one thing after another. This would be great if I meant what I had originally intended, however, what I mean is one damn thing after another. To start; I awoke later than normal as I was thinking I only had an hour drive today because we were sleeping over in Natchez MS. We took our time, loaded up, and headed for the Vicksburg National Battlefield Park. This is a 16 mile round trip, one way driving tour, that memorializes soldiers, states, and officers of this great battle. About half way through it dawned on me that we weren't staying in Natchez an hour away, but in Lafayette, almost four hours away. However, I had several things planned along the way to break up the drive. All of which required us to have left the National Park about 10 am. not 12:45. I drove on a one lane, 55 mph road to Natchez where we planned to take a beautiful carriage ride, tour some old mansions, then head over to learn about the Natchez Indians for a few mins, and finally round out the area with a quick trip to Frogmore where we would tour the only tourable cotton gin in Mississippi. Well.... I can tell you we arrived in Natchez, drove to the riverfront, took some pictures, found the carriage rides, thought better of it, scratched the Indians, and raced to the cotton gin. I just knew it would be so much fun for all of us. My plans were falling apart. If you know me, this is not something I take lightly. Now feeling awful for the day not going according to plan I pressed on. Well I would love to say that things improved once we reached Frogmore, however once a day turns south sometimes recovery is just wasted effort! Laughing about it all becomes a more logical choice than being upset. As I was arriving at the cotton gin on my left, I was reading the signs and not thinking about other people being on the road with me, (makes since given there's only another car every 10 mins), so I slowed to almost to a crawl and without even looking began to cross the lane to turn into the gin. As I did a huge white blur came from behind me out of nowhere barreling past us on the left side of the road. I jerked the wheel to the right, and somehow completed my turn. By the Gods grace and only his Grace we were all spared from a nasty wreck that would have been my fault. I was so focused on the attraction, that I took for granted I was alone on the road. I sat with my head on my steering wheel for a few mins and just prayed and thanked GOD for paying attention when I wasn't. So why tell a story that makes me look bad......one, because its the what happened, but second, because its an opportunity for me to share an experience where in God stepped in and protected my family. Had he not, I wouldn't be blogging right now. By all accounts we should have been in a wreck today. After that I headed onto Lafayette. We arrived about 5:30, checked in, unloaded, and looked for a great local place to eat. We found one! It was a gem to say the least. It called Nashes and it is fabulous. Located in a home built in the 1908 this restaurant is a third generation place that serves the most amazing dishes. Their service is excellent, the decor is charming and inviting, and the food.... oh the food! That rounded out day 10 of our trip. It wasn't the best day.......... but then again maybe it was, because we are all still here to tell the story and look forward to tomorrows adventures. Til tomorrow, good night!

Money saving tip: Buy a National Parks Pass and always look for things to do in every state's national parks. There are tons of fun and very cheap things for the whole family to do in the national parks. If you happen to travel with a senior have them buy a golden age pass, then you can get into most all of the parks for free.
